About the Work
This piece is built around a strong contrast between the density of the painted symbol and the exposed geological mass surrounding it. Circles, triangular forms, repeated points, branching black lines, metallic surfaces, and small mark-like structures gather into an irregular central formation. Gold, copper, violet, blue, red, white, and pale turquoise create points of luminosity across the darker mineral surface. Rather than occupying the entire face, the composition expands and contracts across the stone, allowing fractures, cavities, color changes, and exposed mineral structures to become active parts of the work.
The symbol has no assigned translation or fixed meaning. There is a sense of structure and connection within it, but no predetermined sequence for reading it and no single point from which it must be understood. As the object is turned, the painted complexity disappears and the physical history of the petrified wood takes over, revealing dramatically different surfaces, colors, layers, and textures. The contemporary symbol exists within that much older structure, creating an encounter between two forms of information, one produced through human mark-making and the other through deep geological time. The relationship remains open rather than resolved.
